HEAVY IN MY LIFE BIG TYME
I am STILL in shock about the news of the passing of Heavy D. It is almost like a bad dream. I sat up late last night and began listening to several of his songs and realized that each song outlined a particular period in my life. I have always felt that I was raised by music but this became VERY apparent in the wee hours of today.
I remember riding my bike to Soundwaves Record store to buy the cassette…yes I said cassette of the BIG TYME album. I almost crashed my bike getting home to listen, I was so excited! I remember seeing him in those rayon shirts and oak tree suits dancing with Trouble T-Roy and G. Wiz…back in the day and being in my living room trying to mimic the moves…EPIC!!!!!!
I had the chance to briefly interact with him during my time with John Legend and he was super cool. I was quietly super geeked that I was able to talk to him. His songs are attached to SO many memories of my upbringing. The news of his passing leaves me with NO WORDS…

I remember meeting Mehdi years ago in Brooklyn at my friend Estelle’s place. He was in town from Paris and this is before he was recognized for his amazing music that rocked the world. We ran into each a while later during the madness of Winter Music Conference in Miami and words can’t express how sad today is because of his passing. He was also one of the first artist I ever blogged about. I will always remember his smile and genuine energy…
